Preparing for Your Skin Needling Treatment

Skin needling may not be suitable for everyone. A consultation is required prior to treatment to assess your skin, discuss your concerns and goals, and determine whether the treatment is appropriate for you. Your clinician will provide personalised pre-treatment recommendations designed to optimise your treatment experience and support the best possible outcomes.

2 Weeks Before Treatment

To minimise the risk of irritation and support skin healing, please avoid:

• Laser hair removal on the treatment area
• Waxing, threading, or depilatory creams on the treatment area
• IPL or other light-based treatments on the face
• Chemical or cosmetic-grade peels
• Cosmetic injectable treatments in the treatment area
• Excessive sun exposure and tanning

Daily use of a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen is strongly recommended.

For clients with a history of pigmentation concerns or those with melanin-rich skin, your clinician may recommend a pigment-regulating skincare product as part of your preparation plan to help support an even skin tone and reduce the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation.

1 Week Before Treatment

Please discontinue the use of:

• Exfoliating products, including physical scrubs
• AHAs, BHAs, and other exfoliating acids
• Retinol, retinal, tretinoin, and other vitamin A-based products
• Any skincare products that may cause irritation or increase skin sensitivity

Skin needling stimulates the skin's natural healing response, so it is normal to experience some temporary effects following treatment.

Immediately After Treatment

You may experience:

• Redness similar to mild-to-moderate sunburn
• Warmth or sensitivity in the treated area
• Mild swelling or tightness
• Pinpoint bleeding (depending on treatment depth)
• Increased skin sensitivity

These effects are expected and typically begin to settle within 24–72 hours.

Days 1–3

During the first few days, your skin may:

• Feel dry, tight, or rough to the touch
• Appear slightly pink or flushed
• Experience mild swelling, particularly around the eyes
• Begin the natural healing and regeneration process

Days 3–7

As healing progresses, you may notice:

• Dryness or light flaking of the skin
• Improved skin hydration and radiance
• A smoother skin texture developing over time

It is important not to pick, scratch, or aggressively exfoliate the skin during this period.

Long-Term Results

Skin needling works by supporting collagen and elastin production, which occurs gradually over time. While some clients notice an improvement in skin glow within a few weeks, optimal results typically develop over several weeks to months as the skin continues to regenerate.

A series of treatments may be recommended depending on your skin concerns, treatment goals, and your clinician's assessment.

When to Contact Your Clinician

Please contact Xenial Aesthetics if you experience:

• Increasing redness after the first few days
• Excessive swelling or pain
• Signs of infection, including pus, increasing warmth, or fever
• Any unexpected or concerning symptoms

Proper aftercare is essential to support healing, minimise irritation, and optimise your treatment outcomes.

Days 1–5

During the initial healing period:

• Keep the skin cool and protected.
• Avoid hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, swimming pools, and strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours.
• Avoid touching or picking at the skin.
• Avoid active skincare ingredients, including retinol, vitamin A derivatives, AHAs, BHAs, exfoliating acids, and vitamin C.

After 12 Hours

Morning and Evening:

• Cleanse with a gentle cleanser.
• Apply a hydrating and restorative serum as recommended by your clinician.
• Apply a healing and barrier-supporting moisturiser 2–3 times daily or as required to maintain skin comfort.

After 24 Hours

• Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen daily.
• Reapply sunscreen regularly when outdoors.
• Continue focusing on hydration and barrier repair.

From Day 6

• If the skin has settled and there is no ongoing irritation, gradually reintroduce your regular active skincare products as advised by your clinician.

From Day 7

• Gentle exfoliation may be resumed if your skin has fully recovered.

Pigmentation Prevention

For clients with melanin-rich skin or a history of pigmentation concerns, a pigment-regulating serum may be recommended as part of your treatment plan. Ideally, this should be introduced two weeks prior to treatment and can generally be recommenced five days after treatment, subject to your clinician's advice.
